Two year old Rico was born with Septo Optic Dysplasia, a blinding disease for which there is no cure. He loves music and to play at home as other children running around make him nervous. Rico loves to play in sunlight and feel the breeze on his skin. His mother, Danielle Providence gave up her social worker studies to become a full time carer for Rico. Their home in High Wycombe had an open garden with a low wire fence and other children regularly came in and broke Rico’s toys, including his trampoline which he requires for exercise.

4C received funding through charity Helping Children Locally, and 4C member Dominik Lach of DL Construction along with 4C volunteers erected a 5ft fence and gate around the garden and built a lockable shed for Rico’s toys. John Lewis, High Wycombe and DML Marketing, Chalfont St Peter donated a new trampoline and a computer for Danielle to continue her studies. Parents of Thorpe House School, Gerrards Cross donated musical instruments.

Danielle said “I appreciate the time and effort which has given my son a lovely garden where he can play safely without anyone getting in the way. I think he will have the best summer ever and it’s all down to Dominik and 4C.”

The Hairoun Centre is a charity run social club in existence over 20 years, which relies heavily on fundraising. Many of the attendees live alone, are in wheelchairs or have dementia, and so social interaction is crucial to all. The Hairoun Centre garden was a potentially great social area going to waste, until SecuriCare and CliniMed stepped in.

Wanting to physically get involved in a project, and aided by a generous grant from the Bucks Foundation, the team set their plan in motion with great enthusiasm. In fact so many wanted to help they had to draw names out of a hat! The CSR team from SecuriCare and CliniMed took some of the Hairoun patrons for a trip to the garden centre to pick out the new plants and furniture for their garden.

Day one of the hard graft saw the first team of four clear out the garden, and on day two the second crew turned soil, planted plants, trimmed hedges and placed furniture, all to the backdrop of singing coming from The Hairoun Centre.

Renovation complete, the newly decked out garden has colourful blooming flowers with exotic names like Phlox, Hebe and Clematis, and new teak patio furniture, meaning card games and dominoes out in the sun are the order of the day. And SecuriCare and CliniMed didn’t stop there; they also installed new shelves in a storage cupboard and employed an HR expert to help put policies and practices in place at The Hairoun Centre.

All of which is greatly appreciated by the 5 full time staff members and volunteers, and the 32 ladies and gentlemen who frequent The Hairoun Centre, Monday-Thursday, between 9am-3pm.
